Every end of year, members of the Writer’s Club come together to have a fun outing. It’s an opportunity to relax and reflect on past activities.

On the 16th of December, 2017, we gathered at the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC), located along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos, Nigeria. Established by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in 1990, the LCC has grown into one of Africa’s prominent and most-diverse urban Nature Parks. LCC is one of the best urban parks to satiate visitors’ curiosity of nature. Some of the side-attractions at the park include a  401-metre long canopy walkway, a family park, a tree house, nature station, bird hide, a swamp look-out station and floor games.

We arrived at the park around 1:30pm and commenced with an opening prayer. Then we had a discussion on our progress in the club so far. After rounding up the discussion, we posed for pictures, shared the cake and then ventured into several games such as scrabble, ball and a word game. At about 3:00pm we sat down for lunch and then proceeded for the nature walk led by a tour guide. The nature walk had different attraction spots and views including sights of nature, a tree house, canopy walk, floor games and fish ponds with a variety of fishes. Our group pastor, Pastor Leke Babayomi then had a brief discussion with us about the activities that had taken place in the year, our progress so far and plans for the future. Gifts were also given out to winners of the games. A closing prayer was said and we returned back to the bus and departed the park.

It was fun all the way.

The club is divided into the following sub-units:

  • Spoken Word: Organisers of GAP (Gospel According To Poetry), a periodic presentation of spoken word, dance drama, miming and musical performances.
  • Editorial: A unit devoted to the compilation, editing and preparation of periodic publications. They are also involved in training members of the Writer’s club.
  • Welfare: A unit in charge of taking care of the members needs in the group. They call and check on members, organise outings and programs of the Writer’s club.
  • Graphics: The graphics unit is in charge of graphics, concept development and website design for the Writers Club and the church at large. They design layouts for banners and publications for the group.
  • Blog:  The blog team is in charge of publicity and manages the Writer’s Club blog and social media sites. In pursuit of the club’s goals and mandate, the Blog Team works closely with all other sub-units.

There are also inter-unit initiatives and activities involving members from the various sub units. Some of these include the monthly Art Drive and Book Review activities. Meetings are held after church service every Sunday at the University of Lagos Multipurpose Hall and monthly vigils are held every second Friday of the month at the MFM Headquarters Youth Church Auditorium.
