Spoken Word

A collection of short poems by our Spoken Word Ministers to celebrate Nigeria at 58.

1960 we gained independence,

In togetherness we ruled,

In love and unity we grew,

Our land where fruits and honey reign,

Arise O compatriots.

Melody Lawal

In love and unity we grow,

To see our future bright and glow,

Nigeria we are,

Independent we remain,

We shall of course rise as the giant of Africa we are.

Oluwagbohun Favour

My country at 58,

A place most of its inhabitants hate, forgetting this is home,

Painted black, painted white, still it’s our own,

Tell me a story, one not filled with hysteria,

She starts with God bless me! God bless Nigeria!!

Deborah Oriola

When I think of her, I get goose bumps,

I choose to live for her, no loose ends,

Ours is a story of 1st October 1960,

I call her Peace, I call her Gods own,

When you see the Greenland, you’re reminded that, THIS IS NIGERIA.

Bukola Fulani

Nigeria, our father land,

Served by Heroes past, whose legacy beckons on us,

But “sorry path” is what we tread,

Seeking for a new Nigeria,

Who will save our country?

Mercy Onyejegbu

Hey, stand aloof atop the roof,

Full of green you’ll see an eagle,

A giant with stallions stationed for peace,

But greed and grief her confluence flows,

Five and eight, even till now, battling restructuring.

Adeyemi Michael Adetunji

From the North to the East, the West to the South,

With each tribe speaking in a different tongue,

See people focus more on weakness and,

They forgot that for so long, they’ve proven that there’s strength in diversity,

Happy birthday my Nigeria.

Lawrence Acha

Nation of my birth,

An eagle tied down,

Waiting for a release,

To soar and lead your peers,

The African continent awaits your emancipation.

Leke Babayomi

The greenness in the land raises the hope,

All still looking rough like there’s no reason for hope,

The strength in your youth never quenches my thirst of hope,

The unity in diversity strengthens the hope,

I see Nigeria, I see hope.

Ibiremilekun Ibikunle

There was once and there will certainly be,

For certain, this is not to be it,

One, five, ten decades perhaps,

But be that as time may long be,

Light, Leadership. Life: We will be great again.

Praise Sanni-Adeniyi
