A group of Spoken Word ministers reflect on the state of the nation.

Independence day

It’s a brand new age, a brand new page

The opening of a new chapter

The beginning of history

Or the start of a tale of misery.

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe

The land of the great, nation of peace and unity

A land of hospitality filled with people of the strongest hearts

Where strangers are welcome despite their colour, language and religion

But faith and progress are absent; perhaps our Coat of Arms needs to be amended

Welcome to Nigeria, the land I’ll forever call home.

Lawrence Acha

Our fatherland, founded from bloody battles

Battles that bred our nation’s freedom

And made us independent of the whites, to soar as eagles in the sky

On October 1st, we coloured our bodies in green and white

Stamped our fingers on our chest to hear our hearts pump out peace and unity.

Grace Elioku

Sounds of joy, basking in euphoria

Freedom from slavery

But the chains still leave us fettered

We are left to wander

Freedom into slavery.

Marvellous Alonge

On Greenland, a white drew a scattered three to unity

A land with black oils; but nuts, coals and cocoa she once ate

Desperate for deliverance, without the Queen’s survival; left for freedom, today it is free doom

An irony of crooks and loots, leading a democratic slavery

So far, too old; the cake is gone and quakes we’ve got.

Adeyemi  Adetunji

Like a young infant grows into youth

Nigeria has grown and developed in these trying years

Like a mother fights for her children

She has fought for her freedom from the colonial masters

Independence is great and so is Nigeria!

Chinaza Okafor

Free from captivity and bondage

Now into hardship and carnage

That we created by ourselves in this new age

Are we now better than we were before?

May the Lord deliver us before he comes.

Omotayo Tantolorun

A dream that one day this nation shall rise up and find out the meaning of its creed

A creed that says the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain

A creed that reminds us of our unity in diversity

Such a beautiful people, dark coloured and goody

Happy Independence Nigeria, our beloved nation.

Alexandra Aremo

Beautiful country

Oh! my country

Blessed with milk and honey

Giant of Africa

Happy Independence Nigeria.
